This large scale studio painting was done from several compositional studies, preliminary drawing and countless photos as reference material. Approaching one late night after plein air painting along the Brooklyn waterfront I crossed the Manhattan Bridge onto Canal St., making a right turn heading uptown on Bowery St. I came across a group of roadway, underground pipe repair workers. It was very late at night and the entire intersection was lit up as if it was the middle of the day. The dramatic shadows on the building as well as the sparks from the steel pipe cutters, supervisors, road workers and heavy equipment opens up a theatrically lit, stage with the midtown skyline as it's backdrop. The entire scene struck me as quite unique and quintessentially New York, "The City that never sleeps". I returned multiple times to complete on site studies toward the completion of this painting. This large oil on linen was included and featured in the 2016 American Masters Exhibition and it received a number of highly praised honers, noted as in the great traditions of nocturne paintings throughout history.
